What is a sworn Spanish translation?

A sworn Spanish translation is an official translation between Dutch and Spanish made by a translator who has been sworn in by a Dutch court and listed in the Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv). The translator binds a signed statement, an official stamp and a signature to a copy of your document, which is what lets Dutch authorities such as the IND, your municipality, the courts and universities treat it as the official version.

What is the difference between a certified and a sworn translation?

In the Netherlands the two terms describe the same thing. A certified translation here means a sworn translation: one produced by a court-sworn, Rbtv-registered translator who attaches a signed statement and an official stamp. In some other countries a certified translation can be a simple signed declaration without that legal standing, so when a Dutch authority asks for a certified translation it means the sworn version.

If you are sending a document abroad, check with the receiving authority whether they need the sworn translation legalised with an apostille as well.

Sworn Spanish translations — where and why they are used

Spanish is one of the most requested outbound language pairs from the Netherlands, after English and German. The demand is broad: Spain (immigration, property purchases along the costas, international marriages), Latin America (Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Peru) and the United States, where Spanish is the de facto second language and is sometimes asked for by name in USCIS procedures.

The main regional point is the difference between Castilian Spanish (Spain) and Latin American Spanish. Legal documents in Spain need Castilian, while documents bound for Mexico or Argentina are expected in Latin American Spanish and may read as foreign if written in Castilian. Spain and every Latin American country named here except Cuba are part of the Hague Apostille Convention, so the standard route works across the region.

Spain runs its own system of sworn translators (Traductor-Intérprete Jurado, appointed by the Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores). Some Spanish authorities — particularly in Catalonia and Madrid — occasionally ask for a Spanish jurado confirmation on top of the Dutch sworn translation. If your document is going to one of those regions, it is worth confirming the requirement with the receiving body before you order.

Common use cases

  • Spanish padrón registration (municipal residence record)
  • Spanish mortgage (hipoteca) — translation of an employment and income statement
  • Mexican immigration (INM) — temporary residence application
  • Argentine university — diploma recognition through the Ministerio de Educación
  • USCIS Spanish-translation requirement (asylum and family-based petitions)

Frequently asked questions: Spanish translation

What is a sworn Spanish translation?
It is a Dutch-Spanish translation made by a translator sworn before a Dutch court and entered in the Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv). It carries the translator's signed statement and official stamp. That is why Dutch authorities, and Spanish ones, accept it as an official translation rather than an ordinary one.
How much does a sworn Dutch–Spanish translation cost?
The price starts at €67 for the first page, and each following page is €75. That covers the translation, the sworn statement, the official stamp and our acceptance guarantee. A digital copy (€9.95), registered shipping (€9.95, free from €299, Netherlands only) and an apostille (€99 per document) are optional add-ons you can select.
How long does a sworn Spanish translation take?
Standard delivery is 5-7 working days. If you need it faster, express delivery (2-3 working days, +50%, minimum €55) is available as an option in the order form. Same-day delivery applies to Dutch to English or French only, so it is not offered for the Spanish pair.
Do I need a sworn translation for the IND?
The IND requires foreign-language documents in a residence or naturalisation application to be translated by a sworn (Rbtv) translator into Dutch, English, French or German. A sworn Dutch-Spanish translation into one of those languages meets that requirement, backed by our acceptance guarantee that the result is accepted by the IND.
Is a sworn translator the same as a certified translator?
In the Netherlands the official term is sworn (beëdigd) translator, registered in the Rbtv. Certified translation is the English label international clients use for the same thing. For Dutch use they amount to the same document, and what matters is the Rbtv registration, not the wording on the request.
Can you translate from Spanish to Dutch as well as Dutch to Spanish?
Yes. We translate in both directions: a Spanish document into Dutch for use here, or a Dutch document into Spanish for use in Spain or Latin America. You choose the direction when you upload the document, and an Rbtv-registered translator for the Dutch-Spanish pair handles it.
Do I need to send my original documents?
In most cases a clear scan or photo is enough, and the sworn translator binds the translation to that copy. Where a particular authority insists on a translation bound to the physical original, that is the exception. We will tell you when it applies before you order, so there are no surprises later.
Do I also need an apostille for Spain?
Spain has joined the Hague Apostille Convention, so a single apostille is usually enough to confirm the authenticity of a Dutch document abroad. Whether you need one depends on the receiving authority, and Netherlands Worldwide sets out the cases. We can arrange the apostille with the translation for €99 per document.
