What is a sworn Russian translation?
A sworn Russian translation is an official translation between Dutch and Russian made by a translator who has been sworn in by a Dutch court and listed in the Register of Sworn Interpreters and Translators (Rbtv). The translator binds a signed statement, an official stamp and a signature to a copy of your document, which is what lets Dutch authorities such as the IND, your municipality, the courts and universities treat it as the official version.

What is the difference between a certified and a sworn translation?
In the Netherlands the two terms describe the same thing. A certified translation here means a sworn translation: one produced by a court-sworn, Rbtv-registered translator who attaches a signed statement and an official stamp. In some other countries a certified translation can be a simple signed declaration without that legal standing, so when a Dutch authority asks for a certified translation it means the sworn version.
If you are sending a document abroad, check with the receiving authority whether they need the sworn translation legalised with an apostille as well.

A sworn Russian translation costs from €67 for the first page, with each following page at €75. Sworn Russian translations — where and why they are used
Russian is the official language of the Russian Federation and is widely used across former Soviet states (Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan), where it serves as a second official or working language alongside the national one. For applicants in the Netherlands the demand is mainly about legal documents in property, inheritance and family matters, and — since 2022 — migration documents for Russian nationals entering the Netherlands through humanitarian procedures.
Russian uses the Cyrillic script, which means the translation has to be correct typographically as well as linguistically — a wrongly transcribed name almost always leads to rejection by the IND or a municipality. We transcribe names by a recognised standard and follow the guidance of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs for diplomatic documents.
The Russian Federation has been part of the Hague Apostille Convention since 1992, but there have been practical complications since 2022: Dutch district courts still issue apostilles for use in Russia, yet many Russian authorities respond slowly or ask for additional consular legalisation. For sworn Russian translations bound for Russian bodies, we recommend confirming the current acceptance route with the receiving authority before you order.
